When we started our season back in July, we talked about winning our region and earning a playoff spot for the first time in school history. Breaking all sorts of records along the way.
We knew that it was a very outside chance to do so heading in to the game so we went into the week as if that was our playoff game, and we had to win if we wanted to advance. The task was big but the opportunity was right in front of our face. The #9 team in our Division came in boasting an 8-1 record and averaging 56 points a game.
We had a great week of practice and told them if they wanted to win they individually had to do their job and collectively work together. They executed the defensive game plan to perfection. Stuffing everything that NPP tried to do right back into the ground. So much so that they had to resort to doing somethings they never had to do throughout the season. We made them uncomfortable and held them to 12 points. Seniors Andrew Oei, Payson McCallister and Tony Jakubczyk led the defense with tackles behind the line of scrimmage and all over the field. It was a site to see. Offensively we sputtered around too much but did provide just enough scoring,a short TD run by QB Gage Lentz capped off with a 50 yd TD pass from Gage Lentz to Zach Jackson, his favorite target, to provide just enough scoring to get the job done. We pulled off the upset, effectively ending the season for NPP as well, they were shut out by Thatcher in the first round of the playoffs. It was a great night for the players, coaches, fans, the school and community. A huge step in the right direction.
